#39 - What is Geocaching?

Today I attended a geocaching workshop at the Beaumont Branch of the Lexington Public Library.

Here's a little summary of what I learned:

Geocaching is a basically a high tech treasure hunt!

Geoky (pronounced "jockey") is the Kentucky geocaching organization

It's free to start geocaching. Just sign up for a basic membership on geocaching.com and use your smartphone to start finding them. :)

Smartphones will work for geocaching but are not as accurate as GPS receivers (GPSr).

There's nearly 2 million caches hidden all over the world.

There's over 50 caches in the park across the street from our house! (Masterson Station Park)

Thanks to geocaching.com member deewhoa for presenting Geocaching 101 to those of us interested in learning about geocaching!

We also got to find our first cache as part of the workshop. :) Here's a picture of the little log. Isn't it cute?
